Google now factors mobile site experience – are you ready?

June 27th, 2013, By

Google has recently announced that they will soon update their mobile search formula to up-rank mobile-optimized web pages and down-rank pages that provide a poor experience for smartphone users.

Some of the common examples of poor experience on mobile:

  • Serving un-optimized desktop versions of the page
  • Redirecting all mobile traffic to the homepage rather than to the specific mobile-equivalent page
  • Faulty redirects that lead to 404/error pages
  • Slow page load speeds on mobile networks

Google Analytics can be used to help you discover if your website is likely to be affected by the upcoming changes in mobile search results, as well as pin-pointing which issues might need fixing. E.g., you can see if there are many redirects to the homepage or error pages, and check page load speeds on mobile.

You can find a good set of predefined ready-to-use reports for this here.
